2022 Create a Gamp Challenge

Our guild challenge for 2022 is to create a gamp. A gamp is an array of threadings and / or colors arranged across the warp and woven as drawn in. A gamp might be created to learn how colors interact together or to study variations of a particular weave structure.

Emily Guilland - Pattern Gamp

This is really what I like to call a Gamp Plus. It is a 4-shaft pattern gamp taken from Janet Phillips book “Designing Woven Fabrics”. I wove 9 of the 10 threadings given in the book. In addition to treadling the 9 warp patterns (the gamp part), there are an additional 36 other treadling patterns woven (the plus part); for a total for 450 different patterns. The gamp was woven in 8/2 Maurce Bussard cotton from Eugene Textile Center, at 24 epi. I also put on enough warp to weave three towels using 3 different treadlings. I am now working on incorporating the patterns into several new projects.

Mina Ossiander - Deflected Doubleweave

This is a deflected double weave gamp designed and woven on an eight harness loom in December 2021. The warp and weft are both a mixture of 10/2 cotton and 2/8 cottolin. It was threaded at 32 epi and was 19 inches wide in the reed, 17.5 inches off the loom, and 15 inches after wet finishing. Shrinkage lengthwise was also significant at about 22%. Each of the 7 sections of the gamp are threaded with 3 colors in blocks (a dark, a bright, and something in-between), and woven as drawn in with 2 colors in blocks. The gamp sections are each separated vertically and horizontally by 16 off-white threads, threaded and woven in a straight draw. The remainder of the warp was woven into kitchen towels, sadly they are all a little narrower than standard!

This is a wide runner for my table in shadow weave camp. I used 10/2 mercerized cotton and purchased cotton fabric for binding the edge. Sett and ends per inch are 20.
